In my previous two Caminos I detailed the songs on my playlist:
30-Days Out – More Later From Elsewhere (2018)
30-Days Out – More Later From Elsewhere (2021)
I haven’t added a lot (that I can remember) in recent days. However, I was advised by a friend who is well-versed in music to add both volumes of Van Morrison’s The Philosopher’s Stone. I have done so and look forward to immersing myself into this music both while traveling and on the long stretches when I’m by myself on the Meseta, where birdsong is rare. Thanks, Dean Daly, for this recommendation!
This is the first Camino I’m doing when my cell phone will be unlocked. This is important because it means I can pick up a basic SIM card in Spain and have access to internet (when I’m in range of a signal). I don’t want to be online any more than I need to be – but it will be useful for finding / booking local accommodations and occasional inspiration / listening enjoyment.
In recent years I’ve enjoyed devotional messages from the Lectio365 app. The app is run by 24-7 Prayer. They were founded on the tenants of the “Order of the Mustard Seed” and follow six biblical practices: prayer, creativity, justice, hospitality, mission, and learning. The app provides a short (10 minute?) devotional each morning and evening, read by various lovely voices from all around the world. While walking to the train in the morning, these thoughtful devotionals have helped me focus for the busyness that lies ahead of me in the city. And it’s a welcome way to wind down in the evening. Thank you, Adrian, for the introduction to this organization / app! Lectio 365 – 24-7 Prayer International For anyone who doesn’t want to download the app – they have an electronic newsletter as well.
On my train commute, I’ve also enjoyed listening to sermons and podcasts by Lutheran minister, Nadia Bolz-Weber. I had the opportunity to hear her a couple years ago at the Greenbelt Arts Festival in England and really enjoyed her perspective and honesty. As I write, this is her latest sermon: https://open.substack.com/pub/thecorners/p/too-small-to-fail?r=1qgq5f&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=email
I also quite like the Frugal Fit Mom podcast, for her helpful budget and life-hack advice. And, The Minimalists. They’re the ones from whom I first heard about charity:water. They mentioned the organization when Joshua Fields Millburn gave up his birthday a few years ago to help raise funds for a well. That has, in part, been an inspiration for my walk for water.
And there are others.
I’m very open to finding new songs, audiobooks, podcasts, etc. Please feel free to add your recommendations in the comments or to send me a note in private, if you prefer.
Cheers! Many thanks!
