Melide to Santa Irene

Day 14

So, this morning I started with the verse of the day and wasn’t sure what my day would hold after this one…

But, as it turned out, there were no extra packs to be carried. Phew!

I wish I could convey how pleasant it was to walk through the eucalyptus forests today. For a glimpse, if you’re in the US go to Trader Joe’s and get a bouquet of eucalyptus and have it near you for the entire day. Just delightful.

I stopped several times today for snacks and rest as the walk was about 35k. Pastry, several coffees, fruit, orange juice, and about 1:30 I stopped for another OJ and a cheese sandwich. He asked if I wanted ham with that. No, just cheese. I haven’t seen a single pig the entire hike. But when the view from the cafe is of happy cows eating clover and grass,…

…one can guess that the cheese is fresh and delicious. It was.

I saw this little guy working his way across the path and moved him to the other side so he wouldn’t get squished by a bicyclist. I’m sure the farmers would have preferred his demise – but it seemed like a waste of exquisite artwork.

Also, I think I found my dream car today.

About 3:30 I hit a wall. At that point it occurred to me that I hadn’t added salt to my meals yesterday. I stopped at the next cafe for bread with olive oil and salt and a can of mineral water. Just what I needed.

Made it to my destination about 5. Santa Irene. It’s about 22km from Santiago so I should, hopefully, be there tomorrow. This albergue is lovely. Plenty of room. Somewhat secluded. It comes with linens and towels. €13 for the bed and €10 for a local cuisine dinner. Bargain! I also admired the kitchen in the way by. A classic.

Early night, I hope.

More later…

  1. Beautiful forest. Bet it cleared your sinuses by the time you had walked through! And what a long walk! Great effort and so close to Santiago. That has come slowly and now quickly. It will quite the deal to go further than was available to you next time and get a different kind of closure to your pilgrimage at Finisterre.
