Roncesvalles to Zubiri

Day 2

Woke up late, by hostel standards, @7am. First thing I did after morning prep was to dump out my bag and jettison anything that wasn’t absolutely essential to lighten my load.

Then headed down to a pilgrim’s breakfast of toast, fruit, meat and cheese, and fresh orange juice. Then out the door to the next destination.

The terrain was so much better and the scenery was, again, gorgeous. I’m amazed that keeping cows and sheep inside fences seems to be optional.

And, since it’s such wet country one hears running water along almost every path. Even in the towns redirecting the water is a major part of the infrastructure. In one town they had open gutters along the road. While not ideal for pedestrians, it prevents the municipal workers from having to guess where the clog might be.

Only 18k today. I stopped in a little town to buy pan y queso (bread and cheese) and picked up several bottles of water along the way as well. I think this little guy was disappointed I didn’t hand him cheese. I would have but it would have involved taking my pack off.

After 5 hours arrived in Zubiri and got the last room open at a hostel right near the town’s edge. I sense a theme. My room looks out onto a river and a Roman bridge.

Good day.

More later.,,

  1. Well done day 2. So you have met the famous cow themed pilgrims. You will see them all along the route making their way (you can’t tell me they are not the same ones). Look forward to more water based encounters tomorrow.
