Villafranca to Vega del Valcarce

Day 25

Because yesterday’s apartment was such a wonderful place, we didn’t feel rushed to hit the trail early. And, we endeavored to not make a massive walk out of the day.  We were able to take our time and stop along the way, enjoying the shade and sun, valleys and mountains, and the gorgeous sound of birds and the river we were walking next to.

We arrived at our shorter day’s destination before one and asked a few locals for a hostel recommendation.

We were sent across the river to Hostel Fernandez. The wonderful Maria said private rooms that would work for us were taken but the actual hostel room was almost vacant. We took beds in the albergue room for 8€ each and basically had the place to ourselves, sharing with only one older gentleman. The windows opened to a spectacular breeze and the sound of the river directly below. Couldn’t have planned a better location. After showers, we combined laundry into one load to save money, water, & time, and then headed out to sit by (and wade in) the river.  Such a leisurely afternoon!

This year’s particular Camino time has the extra component of being in the middle of the World Cup. Fortunately all the games are typically after our walking time and since they feature the best teams in the world, it’s been great to be able to witness it. Germany beat Sweden in tonight’s game.

Shortly afterwards my friends headed out to the annual San Juan festival in a nearby town. I stayed back and was serenaded by local artists across the river before heading to sleep.

Such a beautiful day!
