Day 8: Los Arcos to Logrono

Temps today were perfect for walking – high of 70 and sunny. Stunning views backward upon leaving Los Arcos.

I’d been walking for about an hour, perhaps, when I heard Gerwyn and Linda chatting behind me on the trail.

Gerwyn & Linda
Poppy-lined trail.

We had a lovely chat, on and off for several hours, as we walked and I was delighted to hear about their lives at home, hobbies, family experiences, and meaningful world travels. In Sansol we stopped for coffee and croissants about 9.

At one point, we happened across an area with little stone piles left to signify the special nature of the place and also a place to leave items in memory of folks.

A place of mini altars

It’s ironic as just last night a dear friend sent me a passage from the book “An Altar in the World” that spoke of just such a thing:

I can set a little altar, in the world or in my heart. I can stop what I am doing long enough to see where I am, who I am there with, and how awesome the place is. I can see it for once, instead of walking right past it, maybe even setting a stone or saying a blessing before I move on to wherever I am due next. Earth is so thick with divine possibility that it is a wonder we can walk anywhere without cracking our shins on altars.”

In Viana we met Stuart on the way into town. That was their endpoint for the day. We all stopped for lunch and then bid a sad farewell until next time. (Hoping to see them in Burgos at the weekend.)

Stuart and I walked on to Logrono, chatting for a couple hours about family, friends, holiday plans, and Stuart’s involvement in Alzheimer’s Scotland (I’ll link his fund drive again here:)

Another altar just before Logrono

Karen from California had kindly arranged for her and I to share a two bed apartment near town center. It’s in a lovely very old brick building. The temps immediately dropped naturally by 10 degrees (F) and there wouldn’t apparently be much need for AC most days. She had arrived first and was settled in. We chatted for a bit upon my arrival and then I got cleaned up and we headed out for dinner. The only thing going in Logrono in the evenings is tapas. So we found a place that was quiet and clean and had a few samplings of tapas for dinner. Amazing flavor.

We’re both enjoying the comfortable beds and actual linens. What a luxury.

Early night!

More later…
